Bagru is a small town located in the Indian state of Rajasthan, about 20 kilometers southwest of Jaipur, the state capital.

History & Cultural Significance

  • Originated in 18th century by Chhipa community migrating from Alwar to Bagru.

  • Practiced for over 450 years, tied to traditional clothing like ghagras, odhnis, turbans.

  • Received Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2008.Key Characteristics

  • Natural Dyes: Indigo (blue), alizarin (red), pomegranate & turmeric (yellow/beige), harda (mordant).

  • Motifs & Patterns: Floral, geometric, nature-inspired (peacock, sunflowers, mango), tribal influences.

  • Fabrics: Lightweight cotton, silk blends, sometimes handwoven khadi.

Printing Process

  • Fabric Preparation: Scouring and harda treatment for dye absorption.

  • Block Carving: Hand-carved wooden blocks for outlines and fillers.

  • Techniques:

    • Direct printing with multiple blocks.

    • Dabu mud-resist printing to create patterns by resisting dye.

    • Indigo vat dyeing for deep blue colors.

  • Finishing: Sun-drying, washing, and sometimes boiling to set colors.

Identifying Authentic Bagru Prints

  • Slight irregularities due to hand printing.

  • Natural dye smell, soft fabric feel.

  • Color bleed visible on reverse side, unlike digital prints.
